Cultural Perspectives: The Traditional Chinese System

Interestingly, age isn't defined the same way everywhere. In traditional Chinese culture (often referred to as Xu Sui or nominal age), a person is considered 1 year old at birth. Furthermore, their age increases at the Traditional Chinese New Year rather than on their actual birthday.

There are two logical ways to look at this:

  1. The Day-to-Day Method: Treating February 28 to March 28 as one month, plus 3 additional days.
  2. The Month-End Method: Treating the end of one month to the end of another as a full month, regardless of the day count.
